White House plaque

In 2000 the biennial Durrell conference took place in Corfu and I went with my sister. On one of the days everyone went up to Kalami by boat and had lunch at the White House taverna. After that a plaque honouring LD was unveiled by Penelope and Margo. Since then the owners of the White House have realised that brother Gerald is a much bigger draw than Lawrence – My Family And Other Animals remains one of the funniest and most enchanting of books – so they have plaqued him as well. (And kindly added Nancy as well – though it does now read as if she is Gerry’s brother – oh well) There was some concern when the Durrell School conference went there this year and read some of the entirely fictitious publicity material saying that the White House had been Gerald’s family home, but since neither Gerrry nor Larry had a very straightforward relationship with literal truth, I rather like it. In fact it seems most appropriate!
